What is a threshold value?
A threshold value (cut-off) is the level that determines whether a drug test is assessed as negative or positive. If the concentration of a substance (or its metabolites) is below the threshold, the sample is normally reported as negative, and if it is above the threshold, it is reported as positive.
Threshold values are used to make results more comparable and reduce the risk of trace amounts being misinterpreted. The threshold value is affected by sample type (blood, hair, saliva or urine), test method (rapid test or laboratory analysis) and the purpose of testing. Lower threshold values often mean higher sensitivity.
What is half-life?
Half-life is the time it takes for the amount of a substance in the body to decrease by half. The concept is used in pharmacology and toxicology to describe how quickly a substance is broken down and eliminated.
Half-life is affected by several factors, such as metabolism, dose, age, body composition and liver and kidney function. A longer half-life means the substance stays in the body longer, but it doesn't always mean it can be detected for the same duration in a drug test. Detection time also depends on sample type and test method.
Why are low threshold values important?
